How to Send a Message

Winklr gives you several ways to connect with people, from a quick tap or wink to full conversations. Here is everything you need to know about messaging.

Starting a conversation

There are two ways to begin chatting with someone:

Send a tap or wink

The easiest way to break the ice is from someone's profile. Tap the chat bar widget on their profile to send a tap/wink. This sends a quick notification with a default emoji to let them know you are interested.

Message from the inbox

You can also start a conversation directly from your Inbox. If you already have an existing chat with someone, simply tap on it to continue the conversation.

Sending text messages

  1. Open a conversation from your Inbox, or start a new one from a profile.
  2. Type your message in the chat bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Send button.

Messages can be up to 2,000 characters long. The text input area grows automatically as you type longer messages.

Enter key behaviour

By default, pressing the Enter key creates a new line. If you prefer Enter to send your message immediately, you can change this in Settings > Chat by toggling "Enter key sends message" on. When enabled, use Shift+Enter to add a new line instead.

Sharing photos and videos

Tap the attach (+) button next to the text input to open the attachment panel. You have several options:

  • Gallery -- Select up to 10 photos or videos at once from your device's photo library.
  • Camera -- Take a new photo using your front-facing camera. The photo is automatically saved to your gallery.
  • File -- Browse your device for video files or other media.

After selecting your media, you will see a preview strip at the bottom of the screen showing thumbnails of each file. From here you can also toggle view-once mode so that the recipient can only view the photo or video a single time before it expires. See View-Once Messages for more details.

Supported formats and size limits

TypeFormatsMax size
ImageJPEG, PNG20 MB
VideoMP4, MOV, QuickTime, MPEG, WebM500 MB
AudioMP320 MB

You can send up to 10 files in a single message.

Sending GIFs

Tap the attach (+) button and select GIF to open the built-in Giphy picker. Browse or search for a GIF, and tap it to send it immediately -- no confirmation step required. GIFs auto-play for a few seconds in the chat and then pause, with a tap to replay.

Sharing albums

From the attachment panel, select Album to share one of your photo albums directly in the conversation. The recipient can tap the album message to browse through all the photos and videos in it.

Replying to messages

You can reply to a specific message to keep conversations organised:

  • Long-press on a message and select reply, or
  • Swipe a message to the right.

Your reply will appear with a reference to the original message, so both of you can follow the thread.

Sending reactions

Tap on any message to open the emoji reaction picker. Choose from the default reactions or any of your recent emojis. Up to 10 recent reactions are stored for quick access.

Default reactions include thumbs up, heart, laughing face, surprised face, sad face, fire, and clapping hands.

Tips

  • A personalised first message is more likely to get a response than a generic greeting.
  • You can send messages at any time -- the recipient will see them when they next open the app.
  • Use reactions to quickly acknowledge a message without typing a full reply.
