Turning Off Location & Discovery
There are two ways to stop sharing your location on Winklr. You can turn off Discovery mode within the app, or revoke location permissions at the operating system level.
Option 1: Turn off Discovery mode
This is the recommended way to stop appearing in Discovery.
- Go to Settings > Discovery.
- Toggle Discovery mode off.
What this does:
- You are completely hidden from the radar feed. No one can find you in Discovery.
- You cannot browse other profiles in Discovery either. This is an intentional safety measure to prevent users from viewing others while remaining hidden themselves.
- Your existing conversations are not affected. You can still send and receive messages as normal.
Option 2: Revoke location permissions on your device
You can remove Winklr's access to your GPS at the operating system level:
- iOS: Open the Settings app > scroll to Winklr > Location > set to Never.
- Android: Open the Settings app > Apps > Winklr > Permissions > Location > select Deny or Don't allow.
The Discovery screen in Winklr also provides an Open Settings button that deep-links directly to your device's location settings for convenience.
What this does:
- Winklr can no longer access your GPS position, so Discovery cannot function.
- You will see the setup card on the Discovery screen prompting you to grant location permission.
- Your existing conversations continue to work normally.
What happens when location is off
Regardless of which method you use:
- You disappear from the radar feed. Other users will no longer see you in Discovery.
- You cannot see other profiles in Discovery. The grid requires both Discovery mode and location permission to function.
- Messaging is unaffected. All existing conversations continue working, and you can still send and receive messages.
- No location data is collected while permissions are revoked or Discovery mode is off.
Re-enabling Discovery
To start appearing in Discovery again:
- Turn Discovery mode back on in Settings > Discovery (or from the setup card on the Discovery screen).
- Ensure location permission is granted. If you previously revoked it at the OS level, you will need to re-enable it in your device settings. The setup card on the Discovery screen provides an Open Settings button to help you do this quickly.
Once both conditions are met, you will reappear in the radar feed and can browse nearby profiles again.
