How Discovery & Location Work

Discovery is Winklr's way of showing you a grid of nearby profiles. It relies on two things being enabled: Discovery mode and location services (GPS). When both are active, you will see a grid of people near you.

Requirements

To use Discovery, you need:

1. Discovery mode turned on -- This is a toggle found in Settings > Discovery, or on the Discovery screen itself via the setup card.
2. Location permission granted -- Winklr needs GPS access to determine your approximate area. If permission has not been granted, the setup card on the Discovery screen shows an Open Settings button that deep-links directly to your device's location settings.

If either condition is not met, a setup card is displayed on the Discovery screen prompting you to enable what is missing.

How the grid works

• Discovery displays a grid of nearby profiles.
• Pull down to refresh to trigger a new location update and search for nearby users.
• Scroll down to load more profiles with infinite scroll.
• Results are cached for a short period and automatically refresh when you move to a new area.
• There is a brief cooldown between searches to keep things running smoothly.

Filtering profiles

Tap the filter icon on the Discovery screen to open the filter sheet. Available filters include:

• Status filters -- Online Now, Favourite
• Photo filters -- Has Photo, Has face pics
• Tag-based filters -- Dynamic tag group filters based on profile tags
• A search bar to quickly find specific filter labels
• Use the Clear button to reset all filters, or Apply to activate your selections.

Location privacy

Your location is protected by design:

• Exact GPS coordinates are never shared with other users. Your position is anonymised.
• Location updates are rate-limited to protect your privacy, even if you move continuously.
• Distance display is permanently disabled as an anti-stalking safety measure. Other users cannot see how far away you are.

Permissions

When you pull to refresh on the Discovery screen, Winklr will request location permission if it has not already been granted. You can grant or manage this permission at any time through your device settings.
